How to Telecommute from the Beach

Have you ever dreamed about working from the beach on a nice sunny day? Recently, I was drinking my coffee in the morning and using my iPhone to check appointments for the day. I heard on the radio that it was going to be 90 degrees by mid-day. When I checked my emails, I saw that a meeting after lunch was rescheduled... so I started thinking about that 90 degrees and remembered that one of our local beaches in Half Moon Bay, California had a very good wireless data signal from AT&T (seriously, don't laugh).

I decided that I was going to go to the beach and try and watch the webinar I had registered for earlier in the week. I don't know why I had never tried this before.

My schedule the day I went to the beach

  • 7am - Drink coffee, read emails and check my calendar for the day
  • 7:30am - Go to my desk and work
  • 10am - Drive to the beach
  • 10:30am - Set up on Beach for Webinar
  • 11am - Watch the webinar, take notes and eat lunch
  • 12pm - Take a short walk on the beach
  • 12:30pm - Drive back to office
  • 1pm -  Work til the end of day with a big smile on my face
  • 6pm - Relax, have a drink and think about when I can try this again with another webinar

Checklist for Watching a Webinar at the Beach

  • Beach chair
  • Umbrella or sun screen to block the sun glare from your iPad or screen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Small ice cooler and ice
  • Suntan/sunscreen lotion - put on 30 minutes in advance (before you drive to the beach)
  • Pack a sandwich, bottled water, snack, napkins
  • iPad with WiFi and cellular radio (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile)
Important: You need to test the beach location in advance for a strong cell signal before the day of the webinar
  • Bring your headphones for backup in case the sound of the crashing waves is too distracting while listening to the webinar. Noise-canceling headphones is a plus but not necessary
  • iPhone or other smartphone to take notes (I use the Evernote App)
  • Leave enough time to drive, park, walk to the beach and set up
  • Check your local city weather for the day - click here to go to the Weather Channel website

Benefits of Going to the Beach and Watching a Webinar

  • Better Focus on the webinar material (hard to understand, but true)
  • Reduced Stress  - I can't believe how relaxed I felt all day... and night
  • Mid-day walk on the beach exercise and fresh air to get me a bit healthier that day
  • Increased Energy and Productivity in the afternoon
  • Work-Life Balance
  • A Great Story that everyone loves to hear and dream about
